Some of golf's best players have emerged victorious during the tournament's eight-year history. Woods counts six victories in this tournament among his 15 World Golf Championships titles. He won the inaugural event in 1999 at Valderrama in Spain and followed that up with victories in 2002 in Ireland, in 2003 and 2005 in the United States, 2006 in London and earlier this year at Doral Golf Resort & Spa. In 2000, Canadian Mike Weir captured the title, and in 2004, Els of South Africa triumphed.
Doral is called the Blue Monster because when it first was built back in 1960,
people said that Alfred Kaskel was creating a “monster” in the middle of a swamp.
When the course opened, it was known as the “Blue” course. With its swirling winds, water hazards and tough play, it soon became known as the “Blue Monster.”
The Blue Monster was designed by Dick Wilson design and later reworked by Raymond Floyd, the Blue Monster has been hosting PGA Tour events for more than 40 years. The 7,125-yard course is known for its long fairways, undulating greens, thick rough and strategic bunkers.
With its frequent star turns on television, the Blue Monster linksshadows its
Doral siblings, the Gold, Red, Silver and Great White courses. While all offer
excellent golf, only the Great White, named for designer Greg Norman, is mentioned in the same breath as the Blue. Also topping 7,000 yards, its difficulty wins fans and detractors in equal number.
The four "other" Doral courses share some common factors. One is water: The drink is a factor on most of the 72 holes. Another is distraction. Planes buzz linkshead on route to the airport, and the Silver, Gold and Red snake course.
