2011 Indianapolis 500

The 2011 Indianapolis 500 is one of the oldest and richest motorsport events in the world, having the largest attendance and one of the largest radio and television sporting event worldwide! The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built in 1909. It has a 2 mile rectangular-shaped track built for testing and racing. Ray Harroun won the first Indy 500 on Memorial Day, May 30, 1911.

Ray Harroun was an American who drove a Marmon "Wasp" outfitted with his invention, the rear-view mirror. 80,200 spectators paid $1 admission to watch history in the making.

This year will be the 100th Aniversary of the Indianapolis 500 and it will take place on May 29th, 2011 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

An annual tradition had been established. Many considered Harroun to be a hazard during the race, as he was the only driver in the race driving without a riding mechanic, who checked the oil pressure and let the driver know when traffic was coming.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built in 1909 as a testing facility for the local automotive industry. The track was first paved with crushed rock and tar but was soon repaved with brick; hence, the speedway is often called the “Brickyard.” Resurfacing with asphalt has clinksed all but a 36-inch (91-cm) strip of bricks at the start/finish line. The 2.5-mile (4-km) track has two 3,300-foot (1,000-metre) straightaways, two 660-foot (200-metre) straightaways, and four quarter-mile (400-metre) turns each banked at an angle of about 9 degrees. The speedway is also home to a 400-mile (644-km) stock-car race (August) and a Grand Prix race of Formula One cars.

2010 Indianapolis 500 Results

Dario Franchitti won the 94rd running of the INDY 500 on May 30th, 2010, with a speed of 3:05:37.0131, with a pole speed of 227.970 mph (366.882 km/h). After skulling the traditional bottle of milk for the winner, Franchitti stated "this tastes just as good the second time", referring to his victory in the 2007 race. Franchitti led for 155 of the race's 200 laps. He survived the final 36 laps without taking a pit stop.

2009 Indianapolis 500 Results

Helio Castroneves won the 93rd Indianapolis 500 held on Sunday May 4, 2009, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With an average speed of 148.62(362 km/h), pole speed of 224.864 mph and a winning time of 3:19:34.6427. This year marked the beging of a 3 year Centennial Era celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Opening of the Indianapolis Speedway.

Dixon's first Indianapolis 500 victory - after a runner-up finish in 2007 -- was commanding, but hardly dominating.

Dixon might have started from the pole position and led a field-high 115 laps (the most since Juan Pablo Montoya's 167 in 2000), but it was anything but a clear path to his first trip to Victory Circle in "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing." There were 18 lead changes links the 200 laps and enough potential pot holes on the way to Victory Circle to swallow the Honda-powered Dallara whole.

Dario Franchitti has won the 91st Indianapolis 500

Dario Franchitti, driver of the # 27 Canadian Club Dallara/Honda/Firestone, became the second Scotsman to win the Indianapolis 500, claiming the victory in the rain-shortened 91st edition of the event.
