Roy Jones JR Vs. Joe Calzaghe
Nov-8 at 10:00:00 PM

It appears that unbeaten WBC/WBO/WBA super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe is back on the road to retirement. Calzaghe has switched his plans around in the last few weeks, initially stating that he would retire after one more fight and then stating that he would fight a few more times depending on the money. Now Calzaghe has once again made a call for retirement after his next fight, scheduled to take place on November 8th.

Jones reportedly wasn’t impressed with the Calzaghe-Hopkins bout, feeling that he could have done a better job than Hopkins, who mainly held onto Calzaghe, slowing the fight down, and landing mostly one shot at a time in the bout. Indeed, that would be easy to say, because even though Jones has slowed down somewhat in terms of hand speed, he still throws fast combinations and hasn’t shown the tendency to cling on his opponents like Hopkins has in recent years.

Now Roy Jones Jr will be the next opponent for undefeated world super middleweight champion, Joe Calzaghe.

Anyone as talented as Roy Jones, Jr. is always going to have a chance, but at this stage of his career, Roy's problem nowadays is that he is not active enough in his fights due to his age as well as him being gun shy (afraid of being knocked out again).

With one look at the two fighter’s records, it’s clear that Jones has the much better body of work against top fighters. This leaves one with the question, if Calzaghe had to struggle tooth and nail to defeat a 43 year-old Hopkins, how good is Calzaghe? I personally don’t buy the excuses about his age being the reason why he struggled against Hopkins, because Calzaghe looked and fought pretty much like he always has. The only thing that changed was his level of opposition, not his ability. When put in with a tough fighter with talent, all of a sudden Calzaghe looked fallible instead of his usual unbeatable self. Let there be no mistake about it, Hopkins wasn’t in the same class as Jones during his prime, and in fact lost in a convincing manner.

Jermain Taylor vs. Jeff Lacy Results

Joe Calzaghe’ won last night links Ray Jones Jr answered his critics in Madison Square Garden, showing that he was not dried up. This win has taken Calzaghe fights now to 46-0 (32 KOs), that is certainly impressive.

The fight went to the last round, and Joe Calzaghe won by a convincing unanimous point’s decision. Nothing can take it away from Jones, as he is an eight-time, four-weight champion. He did have a surprise in the first round though; as he suffered a first-round knockdown.

The points score on the night was, 118-109 to Joe Calzaghe. This was only his second fight on American soil, and I am sure that he upset a few people in the crowd.
