Players in the MLB All-Star Game are selected by fan voting. The pitchers and reserve players are selected by the managers of the teams from the previous year's World Series. Typically, the managers of the game are the managers of the previous World Series as well. In order to make the outcome of the game more meaningful, the league that wins the All-Star Game gets home field advantage for the upcoming World Series. The most valuable player in each year's All-Star Game receives the coveted Arch Ward Trophy, named for the man who organized the first MLB All-Star Game back in 1933.

In the 2002 All-Star Game, following a highly controversial tie when both teams ran out of pitchers in the 11th inning, the MLB changed the rules to give the All-Star Game new meaning and additional incentive for victory.

2012 MLB All-Star Game Results
This is the third consecutive victory for the National League, that seems it is getting used to defeat American League in All Star Games after a 12 year lossing streak. With a crushing victory of 8-0 the NL reached the second greatest margin of victory since the AL won 13-3 back in 1983.
2011 MLB All-Star Game Results
The Game between National League and American League Stars ended in a 5-1 win for the NL, their second consecutive victory in All-Star Games. Also the record of 82 players on All-Star Rosters from 2010 was slightly increased with a new record of 84 player on the Rosters.
It was the first MLB All-Star Game to be held in Arizona.
