The battle is on as welterweight superpowers Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito square-off in a compelling and eagerly awaited world title. “The Battle LABATALLA!” This fight will determine the divisions champion and arguably boxing’s # 1 pound-for-pound fighter.
Miguel Cotto is ranked seventh in the world as the best pound for pound fighter by Ring magazine for a reason. The 27-year-old Cotto is still showing his youthful exuberance while the 30-year-old Margarito's has come and gone over the last few years. He showed it against Cintron, but fell flat on his face against Paul Williams to lose his WBO belt in 2007.
Margarito, who made seven defenses of the WBO title he won in 2002 and recently won the IBF belt with an action-packed rematch KO of Puerto Rico’s Kermit Cintron, agrees with his promoter’s prediction.
Margarito, 36-5 (26), a 30-year-old veteran who turned pro when he was 16.
“I want to show everyone that I am still in my prime. I don’t want anyone to miss this fight. I’m going to tell you right now, it’s going to be the fight of the year.
Cotto, who made six defenses of the WBO 140-pound title before winning the WBA welterweight title in December of ’06 and defending it four times (the last defense a five-round blowout of Mexico’s Alfonso Gomez) assured
everyone that he will be ready.
Cotto’s dedication to his craft has produced an impressive 32-0 (26) record. After demolishing then-undefeated Carlos Quintana in his first 147-pound bout, Cotto fought three times in ’07, beating three fighters who were
ranked among The Ring’s top 10 welterweights (Oktay Urkal, Judah and Mosley).
This marks the first time Cotto has fought in Las Vegas since 2004 where he knocked out Randall Bailey in the sixth round, en route to successfully defending his WBO junior welterweight for the first time.
Also, Margarito returns to Las Vegas for the first time in more than two years where he knocked out Manuel Gomez in the first round in defense of his WBO welterweight belt during his first title reign.
