Thirty-seven year old “Sugar” Shane Mosley is currently 45-5 with 38 KOs. He won the first thirty-eight fights of his career, thirty-six by knockout, collecting both IBF lightweight and WBC welterweight belts
along the way.

Since that time, he has won only seven of his twelve fights, all having taken place in the welterweight or junior-middleweight divisions. He has two losses apiece to both Vernon Forrest and Winky Wright and dropped a close decision to Miguel Cotto in a spirited battle last November.

After a brief amateur career, Margarito turned pro, losing three of his first twelve fights. Since that time he has compiled a record of 25-2 with 19 KOs including his stoppage of previously unbeaten superstar Miguel Cotto in July.

His greatest difficulties have come against bigger, left-handed opponents. His most recent loss was to six-foot-one inch, genetic freak Paul “The Punisher” Williams on a slim but unanimous decision.

His other defeat came at the hands of Daniel Santos, whom he stepped up to 154-pounds to challenge for the vacant WBO junior-middleweight title in 2004. Margarito lost via a split technical decision that went to the judges’ scorecards after he had been cut as the result of an unintentional head butt.

Mosley, an underdog perhaps in part because he had suffered a close decision loss to Cotto in November 2007, was way faster than Margarito. And he seemed to also land much heavier blows as he pressured Margarito, who is normally the pressure fighter, throughout the fight.

Mosley was landing huge shots when he finally knocked the usually iron-chinned Margarito down, sending him into the ropes with left hands and down on the end of hard right hands.Margarito (37-6, 27 KOs) went down face-first and was smiling when he rose.

In the ninth, he had nothing left. Mosley was teeing off on him in his corner, and as Margarito fell again, referee Raul Caiz was moving in to stop the fight at the same time Margarito's corner threw in the towel.

Margarito, 30, was out of sorts because he was forced to have his hands rewrapped before the fight after an illegal substance was discovered. Whatever it was, he took his beating like a man.
