Event: UFC 104: “Machida vs. Shogun”
Date: Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at 10 p.m. ET on pay-per-view (PPV)
Location: Staples Center in Los Angeles, California |
Brazil’s Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida defends his UFC light heavyweight title for the first time against his countryman and fellow superstar Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
Machida became the current champion by knocking out Rashad Evans at UFC 98 in May. The win bumped up his record to a perfect 15-0 (seven straight in the Octagon), and the knockout helped to knock the monkey off his back. He had long been labeled as a "boring" fighter, but now has back-to-back knockouts links Evans and Thiago Silva. Also, a second round submission of Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.
While Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (18-3), offers a KO victory links an aging Mark Coleman at UFC 93 and shocking TKO victory links Chuck Liddell at UFC 97, wiched propelled him back into the light heavyweight title picture, which has apparently earned him a title shot against “The Dragon.”
Velasquez (6-0) has agreed to face UFC newcomer Ben Rothwell (30-6) at the Staple Center, Los Angeles. Velasquez was originally supposed to fight Shane Carwin at UFC 104.
Velasquez (6-0), a two-time All-American wrestler at Arizona State, followed up UFC knockouts of Brad Morris, Jake O’Brien, and Denis Stojnic with a unanimous decision links Cheick Kongo at UFC 99 in June. If victorious against Rothwell, Velasquez is then expected to fight the winner of the November matchup between Lesnar and Carwin.
Before his loss to Andrei Arlovski at Affliction, Rothwell had won his last 13 fights in a row. The former International Fight League veteran holds notable victories links Krystof Soszynski (twice), Ricco Rodriguez and Roy Nelson. He last defeated Chris Guillen at Adrenaline MMA 2 in December.
Gleison Tibau (17-7) vs. Josh Neer (25-8-1)
Josh Neer (25-8-1) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 101 on Aug. 8. Neer is 2-2 in his last four fights. It could be a must-win for the 29-year-old “Dentist” from Des Moines.
American Top Team’s Gleison Tibau (19-6) is 4-3 in his last seven UFC bouts. His last Octagon appearance was a close split-decision loss to Melvin Guillard at the “TUF 9? Finale back in June.
