This UFC event expected to take place at MGM Grand Garden Arena on July 7, 2012 will be the 17th UFC event of the year. Silva v Sonnen was originally arranged to take place at UFC 147 in Rio de Janiero; due to a schedule conflict with the United Nations, the fight became headline of UFC 148 at MGM Grand Garden Arena, NV.

Its main event will feature the fight for the middleweight belt, where Silva will be defending his championship against challenger Sonnen. Silva is the undisputed number one pound for pound and Sonnen is currently ranked as the number two middleweight in the world.

This will be their second encounter since the UFC 117 (also for the Middleweight Championship). Where Silva  won with 1:50 minutes left from the 5th round, and remained undefeated in the UFC with a 13 win-streak, althought UFC 117 was his toughest fight in UFC.
