UFC 90: Silva vs. Cote
Date: Oct 25, 2008
Location: Rosemont, Ill. (near Chicago)
Venue: Allstate Arena
Broadcast: Pay Per View

UFC 90 is coming to town and it is bringing the world's greatest pound for pound fighter, Anderson "The Spider" Silva, for a middleweight title fight against his number one contender, Patrick "The Predator" Cote.

Silva, however, represents a significant step up in class. The Brazilian is 7-0 in the UFC, with only three of those fights reaching the second round. Anderson Silva is seen by many UFC fans, as the best pound-for-pound MMA fighter on the planet, a reputation he enhanced July 19 by dispatching light-heavyweight James (The Sandman) Irvin in 61 seconds in a bout contested at 205 pounds.

Cote, (14-4) fighting out of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is on a four fight win streak in the Octagon™, beginning his string of excellence back in February of 2007 with a decision win over Scott Smith at UFC 67. Six months later, he TKO'd Kendall Grove in the first round at UFC 74, and followed that up with a first round TKO over and Drew McFedries at UFC Fight Night in January 2008. But it was his most recent victory, a pivotal win over Ricardo Almeida at UFC 86 on July 5th that propelled him to number one contender status. Now Cote has the opportunity to join countryman Georges St-Pierre as a current Canadian UFC titleholder by taking out reigning champion Silva at UFC 90.

Sean Sherk vs. Tyson Griffin

Las Vegas’ Griffin has been nearly perfect in his UFC stint, going 5-1 since making his Octagon debut in 2006. Among his victims are Clay Guida, Thiago Tavares, Gleison Tibau, and most recently, Marcus Aurelio. In Sherk, Griffin will be taking on a nine year veteran of the sport who is looking to get back in the win column after a loss to BJ Penn in their UFC 84 title fight in May.

Also added to the UFC 90 card is a battle for Brazilian bragging rights when Fortaleza’s Hermes Franca takes on longtime friend Marcus Aurelio in a lightweight bout, and a clash of former Ultimate Fighter alumni between season two’s Josh Burkman and season four’s Pete Sell, who will be making his welterweight debut in the UFC’s initial foray into the Windy City.

A shoulder injury to Gleison Tibau has opened the door for a bout between longtime friends Marcus Aurelio and Hermes Franca at UFC 90 “Silva vs. Cote” on Oct. 25 at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.

On the verge of becoming just another face in the UFC’s deep 155-pound division, Franca knows he has a difficult test ahead of him.

Hermes Franca (18-7) finds himself in need of a victory. The 34-year-old has followed an eight-fight winning streak with back-to-back decision losses to Sherk and Frankie Edgar. A year-long steroid suspension was sandwiched in between.

Aurelio (16-6), a decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who has never been finished, last competed in July when he dropped a unanimous decision to rising lightweight contender Tyson Griffin at UFC 86. The defeat snapped a two-fight winning streak for the 35-year-old, who holds notable victories against former Pride Fighting Championships lightweight titleholder Takanori Gomi, Cage Rage world featherweight champion Masakazu Imanari and veteran Rich Clementi.
