Trevor Immelman proved himself a worthy champion on Sunday, but it's fair to say that a number of his challengers likely will be spending some quality time puzzling over what might have been.
Immelman handled the wind and pressure of Augusta National far better than anyone chasing him Sunday to win The Masters, the first South African in a green jacket in 30 years. |
Immelman held it together around Amen Corner and stretched his lead to as many as six shots on the back nine, taking the life out of a Masters that began with so much hype.
A two-putt par on the final hole gave him a 3-over 75, matching the highest final round by a Masters champion. Even so, it was good enough for a three-shot victory over Tiger Woods, whose hopes for a calendar Grand Slam ended with a thud.
Woods never got within five shots of the lead when he was on the course, twice missed birdie putts inside 8 feet and had to settle for a 72 and his second consecutive runner-up finish in The Masters. |
2007 Masters Cup Winner

Zach Johnson stuck to a carefully devised game plan not going for any par 5s in two shots and finished 11-under par on those holes to win the 2007 Masters. Johnson's total of 1-over-par 289 equaled the highest four-day total in Masters history tying Sam Snead (1954) and Jack Burke (1956). Johnson birdied three of the final six holes Sunday and made a key par save at No. 18 with a deft chip. |
| He defeated Tiger Woods, Retief Goosen and Rory Sabbatini by two strokes. The tradition of the Honorary Starter returned to the Masters when Arnold Palmer became the seventh player to hit an opening tee shot. Palmer's long-time friend and rival, Gary Player, competed in his 50th Masters and Fred Couples made his 23rd consecutive cut, tying Player's all-time mark. |
There was no stopping Mickelson, who came into the week on a roll after winning last week's BellSouth
Classic with a 28-under total.
The left-handed Mickelson opened the tournament with a 70 to tie for fourth place, was tied
for fifth after a second-round 72 and led after a third-round 70.
Mickelson, who is now 35 under in his last eight rounds, is only the fifth player to win his
previous tournament before a Masters victory. Sandy Lyle was the last one to do it, in 1988.
2006 Masters Cup Winner
 |
Winner: Phil Mickelson
He struck for four birdies in a final-round 3-under-par 69, which was good enough for a two-shot victory.
He finished at 7-under 281 on the toughened-up Augusta National Golf Club, the highest
winning total since Mike Weir shot that score in 2003. |
Five players - Jose Maria Olazabal (66 on Sunday), Retief Goosen (69), Woods (70),
Fred Couples and Chad Campbell (71s) - tied for third place, three shots behind Mickelson.
