Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa., will host NASCAR Sprint Cup Races for the 32-straight year in 2011. Built in 1968 anf having the first Nascar Race in 1974. It plays host to not only the Pocono 500, but as well the Pennsylvania 500. For two short months, Pocono Raceway makes the NASCAR world stand up and pay attention.
The 2.5 mile tri-oval track at Long Pond is as unique of a venue as it gets on the Sprint Cup Series. The triangle-shaped track has three different corner lenghts and bankings making it very difficult to set up a car and to frive well. And with the longest straightaway on the schedule, the Pocono 500 is sure to bring plenty of lead changes.
Pocono Raceway is unlike any other track on the NASCAR circuit. Its triangular shape (think clothes hanger) provides a unique challenge for competitors. Each turn has a different degree of banking and different radius while each of the three straights is a different length.
Despite its size (2½ miles), it doesn't carry the speeds of Daytona or Talladega because it is very flat. Drivers do approach 200 mph heading into Turn One, however. Kasey Kahne holds the track qualifying record with a speed of 172.533 mph.
On several times the track came to the verge of bankrupt, D. Joseph Mattioli was ready to sell the track, but he got some good advise and support from Bill France Sr.. He convinced him of to stick to it. The original track had numerous building mistakes made during 25 years. In 1990, slowly they began to rebuilt Pocono Raceway, during ten years the Mattioli family rebuilt and changed the entire facility. Today it is one of the most friendly fan tracks of the NASCAR cuircut. The Mattioli family said that they do not pretend to become the most famous or biggest track in the world, they just want it to be the Prettiest, Friendliest, and Cleanest track in the world.
