The second half of the season is here and I have a handful of betting picks for every MLB betting enthusiast.
Mariner James Paxton and Astro Charlie Morton have 15 wins between the two when Seattle visits Houston in a great pitching duel on Wednesday. Ace Madison Bumgarner gets a re-do against Jhoulys Chacin in a re-match of the two pitchers when Giants host the Padres. And finally, two winning teams, the Nationals and Diamondbacks will clash on Friday in Arizona.
These are my top MLB picks for July 17-23
Seattle Mariners at Houston Astros
When: Wednesday, July 19
Game Time: 2:10 PM ET
Stadium: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
Listed Pitchers: James Paxton (8-3, 3.19 ERA) vs. Charlie Morton (7-3, 4.06 ERA)
Left-hander James Paxton is on an exciting run for the Mariners. He’s 3-0 in his last three starts without allowing a homer. His last outing was a 6.0 inning performance where he gave up five hits and two runs in the 4-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. Paxton has 18 strikeouts in his last two starts.
Facing him will be one of the Astros’ top arms, Charlie Morton. The right-handed pitcher is 6-1 in his last eight starts. He’s coming off a 5.0 inning showing against the Minnesota Twins where he allowed three hits, and five runs while striking out ten.
Both pitchers are in good form, but Houston’s lineup is one of the scariest in the MLB. They are tops in runs, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. James Paxton needs to have the game of his life to win on Wednesday.
San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants
When: Thursday, July 20, 2017
Game Time: 10:15 PM ET
Stadium: AT&T Park, San Francisco, California
Probable Pitchers: Jhoulys Chacin (8-7, 4.33 ERA) vs. Madison Bumgarner (0-3, 3.18 ERA)
Right-hander Jhoulys Chacin leads the San Diego Padres with 92 strikeouts this season. He’s 2-0 in his last three starts as he failed to win the last time he was on the mound. Chacin threw heat for 6.0 innings allowing six hits and three runs while leaving with no decision against the Giants on Saturday. The Padres beat Bumgarner in his first start in three months.
This is the second face off between Chacin and Bumgarner, the later went 7.0 innings in the previous tilt. Bumgarner gave up four hits and three runs while only striking out five. The left-hander was making his first start since April 19 at Kansas City. The next day, he wiped out while riding a dirt bike on a day off in Denver, spraining the AC joint in his left shoulder and suffering bruised ribs.
Washington Nationals at Arizona Diamondbacks
Friday, July 21, 2017
Game Time: 9:40 PM ET
Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
Probable Pitchers: Max Scherzer (11-5, 2.01 ERA) vs. Patrick Corbin (6-9, 4.66 ERA)
One of the most attractive series of the week has the Nationals facing the Diamondbacks in Arizona. Under the Friday night lights, Washington will send right-hander Max Scherzer to the mound hunting for his 12th win of the season.
Scherzer is 3-0 in his last four starts, including a win against Cincinnati on Saturday. The right-hander was nearly un-hittable, allowing three hits without a run in 6.0 innings against the Reds. He recorded ten strikeouts in an easy outing. Scherzer has now recorded double-digit strikeouts in nine of his past ten starts and has a Major’s best 2.01 ERA.
Left-hander Patrick Corbin needs to step up to give the Diamondbacks a chance. He’s 0-3 in his last five starts. He gave up six hits and two runs over 5.0 innings in the 8-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. Anything but a tremendous outing by Corbin will equate to an Arizona loss.
