College Football Pick for Thursday, November 1st
NCAA Thursday Night Football: (11) Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech

Last Thursday the Virginia Tech Hokies were leading Boston College by a score of 10-0 with just over two minutes remaining in the game.  By the time the game was over, highlighted by a Boston College touchdown with 11 seconds left, the crowd sat in silence as their Virginia Tech (6-2, 3-1 ACC) squad headed to the locker rooms as stunned 14-10 losers.  A victory against Boston College would have put the Hokies back in the title picture, instead they drop to number 11 in the country hoping to at least be able to play for an ACC championship.

For the second week in a row the Hokies will play on Thursday night, this time as the visitor.  There is still a question as to who will be quarterback come game time.  Freshman sensation Tyrod Taylor was inactive against Boston College last week, but it was a game-time decision so he will more than likely be able to return to the line up against Georgia Tech.  Taylor has been more of a threat on the ground then on the air so far, reminiscent of another young Virginia Tech quarterback a few years ago, Michael Vick.  On 55 carries, Taylor is averaging 4.5 yards per carry, and has scored three touchdowns.  Through the air he has accumulated another three touchdowns, but on just 52 percent of his passes being completed.  The Hokies main running threat is Brandon Ore.  Ore has scored five times, while picking up just over three yards per carry, a number Virginia Tech fans would love to see pick up a little down the stretch.  Ever since the shellacking at LSU the second game of the season where they gave up 48 points, the defense has been much better.  On the year they are holding opponents to just under 16 points a game.  There are 14 points they gave up last week though they would love to have back.

Georgia Tech (5-3, 2-3) will be entering this game with out their number one offensive threat, running back Tashard Choice, who left their game against Army with a knee injury.  Word is that Choice may be able to return by the end of the year, but it’s a huge blow, as Choice had been averaging over 100 yards per game this season.  Instead the Yellow Jackets will rely on a running back by committee approach with three relatively novice running backs.  Georgia Tech may have to rely more on the arm of Taylor Bennett.  Bennett has over 1300 yards passing this year, but only two touchdowns, with only three interceptions.  Georgia Tech has had a couple of tough loses this year.  In the third game of the year they last to Boston College at home, by two touchdowns, but their next two losses have been by a combined seven points.  They lost to a much improved Virginia team at home, 28-23, and dropped a heartbreaker to Maryland, at Maryland, 28-26.

This will be a tough road game for the Hokies, but they most win if they want to stay in the ACC title picture, and keep hope for an outside chance at a BCS bowl.  Virginia Tech shocked a few people earlier in the year when they handled Clemson on the road relatively easily.  With the loss of Choice for the Yellow Jackets, and the Virginia Tech defense playing pretty well I am taking the Hokies in this one.  But, Virginia Tech may still be suffering from their major let down just one week ago.

College Football Pick for Saturday, November 3th
NCAA Football Game of the Week: (4) Arizona State at (5) Oregon

This game has national title implications written all over it.  The Arizona State Sun Devils have came out of nowhere to start the season 8-0, and 5-0 in the Pac-10.  Oregon (7-1, 4-1 Pac-10) is just a couple plays away from being undefeated, stemming from a 31-24 home loss to California earlier in the year.  The winner of this game may still have a little work to do to get into the top two teams in the country and to play for a national championship, but a victory here will get them very, very close.

Arizona State is on a roll, but they have been criticized for their lack of tough opponents on their schedule.  Their best win came in their last game against California, the team that beat Oregon, but California has been on a downward spiral for the past couple of weeks, so that game doesn’t look as good as it once did.  All of their apparent tough games have been at home, but besides California, they have yet to play another top 25 team.  Now is their chance to show they are real.  To help them prove that will be outstanding quarterback Rudy Carpenter.  Carpenter 65 percent of his passes for just under 2000 yards passing this season.  He also has 17 touchdown passes on seven interceptions. His main receiving target has been Michael Jones.  Jones has five touchdowns on 26 catches this year.  They also have two very solid running backs, each averaging more than five yards per carry.  Keegan Herring has four touchdowns on 5.9 yards per carry, and Ryan Torain has five TD’s with an average of five yards per carry.

Oregon relies on the arm of Heisman candidate Dennis Dixon to do the majority of their offensive damage.  Dixon has thrown 16 touchdowns with just three interceptions.  On the season his passer rating is an astronomical 160.3.  He can also run very well, scoring eight times on the ground, while averaging 5.3 yards per carry to boot.  They also have a very good traditional running back as well by the name of Jonathan Stewart.  Stewart is averaging an amazing 6.7 yards per carry, and had scored nine times.  When Dixon is throwing he likes to pass to Jaison Williams.  Williams is averaging 16.2 yards per carry, and has found the end zone five times.

With the game being in Oregon, and the Ducks having so many weapons to choose from, it’s hard not to favor them in this contest.  But, the Sun Devils are riding an amazing streak that they haven’t rode since a quarterback by the name of Jake Plummer was at the helms.  Oregon has also already shown they are beatable at home this year, with the California loss.  With that, I don’t think Arizona State hasn’t played anyone this tough, and a beat up California team doesn’t count.  They also haven’t come close to playing anyone this tough on the road either.  I think the Ducks will derail the Arizona State train in this one by a score of 31-21, or something close to that.
