College Football Pick for Thursday, October 18th
NCAA Thursday Night Football: (2) South Florida vs. Rutgers
With the losses of LSU and California this past Saturday, formally the number one and number two in the rankings, South Florida (6-0, 1-0 Big East) finds themselves ranked number two in the nation. At this point in the season it was originally believed it would be the Rutgers (4-2, 1-1 Big East) that would be in this position, but a couple of early season losses saw them drop out of the rankings completely.
Early season Heisman trophy candidate Ray Rice is still having a good year despite the two losses. Rice is averaging five yards per carry and has found the end zone an impressive 13 times in just six games. On the year he has run for 818 yards, well over 100 yards per game. Junior quarterback Mike Teel is quietly having a good season. He has passed for 1817 yards on 12 touchdowns with six interceptions. The concern with Teel is that the interceptions have came in big games, where they went on to lose. In the Cincinnati loss he did pass for over 300 yards, which he has done in four of the six games, but he failed to record a touchdown and threw for three interceptions. Teel will get a chance to redeem himself, because right after playing the number two team in the country, they turn around and play the number nine ranked West Virginia Mountaineers. Teel’s two favorite targets have been Tiquan Underwood and Kenny Britt. Combined they are averaging over 20 yards per catch and have each scored four touchdowns. When the Scarlett Knights win, they have been dominating, scoring 20 more points per game then their opponents. Their losses to Maryland and Cincinnati cane by 10 and five points.
The biggest surprise of the year to this point has been the fact that the Bulls are now in a position to head to the national championship if they are able to win out the rest of the way. Much of that success can be attributed to quarterback Matt Grothe who is doing it on the ground as well as through the air. Grothe has passed for over 1,100 yards and has seven touchdowns. On foot he is averaging 4.3 yards per carry and has found the end zone an additional four times. His main receiving threats are Taurus Johnson and Amarri Jackson. They have each caught two balls for touchdowns, and are averaging just about 12 yards per catch each. The Bulls have outscored their opponents by an average of 19.5 points per game, and may have put on their best scoring performance this past week when they put up 64 against a decent Central Florida team.
If the Rutgers would like to get back into the national spotlight a victory here, at home would do it. The Rutgers haven’t played bad this year, they have just failed to live up to the hype they set up for themselves with their Cinderella performance last year. This year we appear to have a new Cinderella in the form of South Florida. I expect the Rutgers to play tough, being they are at home, but they have already lost at home once this year to Maryland. USF looks to have too many weapons, and they can move the ball equally on both the ground and in the air. The Rutgers offense isn’t that bad though, and could score an upset here and it would be a huge surprise, not during this season anyway. I’m going to go with the favorite, in a tight game, 38-35.
College Football Pick for Saturday, October 20th
NCAA Football Game of the Week: (7)Kentucky Wildcats vs. (15)Florida Gators
It seems that every game, every week, in the SEC is a big game. With the possibility of three or four teams still competing for a national championship it makes just about every game compelling. Nothing changes here, as Kentucky (6-1, 2-1 SEC), fresh off their win over the former number one team in the nation LSU takes on last year’s champion the Florida Gators (4-2, 2-2).
The Florida Gators are most likely the best two loss team in the country. If they were to be in another conference they’d most likely be near the top of the rankings. The Gators loss to Auburn for the second year in a row, then lost a tight game to LSU, when LSU you ranked number one in the nation. Despite the losses, the Gators still have one of the top quarterbacks in the nation, Tim Tebow. Tebow has completed 65.5 percent of his passes, while racking up 13 touchdowns on just three interceptions. On the ground he has ran for 500 yards, including nine touchdowns, making him one of the biggest dual threats to come to college football in a long time. His main receiving target is Percy Harvin. Harvin has caught 32 balls, for three touchdowns, while averaging 16 yards per catch. When Tebow isn’t running the ball he is handing off to running back Kesthan Moore, who is averaging 5.4 yards per carry and has found the end zone three times.
If it weren’t for South Florida, Kentucky might be the most shocking story in the season. Kentucky is coming off a victory over number one LSU, and has to be able to forget about that and play the Gators, in Florida. The man who will help them take on their task is their superstar quarterback Andre’ Woodson. Woodson has already passed for 21 touchdowns, and has shown he will never fold under pressure. After being behind most of the game against LSU he was able to keep his team focused and pull off an unthinkable win. In that triple overtime victory Woodson threw for three touchdowns and ran for one more. Keenan Burton and Dickie Lyons have each caught over 30 balls for a combined eight touchdowns.
Because of this game being in Florida I think I’m going to favor the Gators. The Gators are still young, and this season will clearly be a stepping stone to greater things, but I think they have enough to pull this one out. If someone tells you they can predict outcomes of games at a high clip this season I would ask to check their credentials. I think the Gators are due to win one of these close games, and the Wildcats have some problems with South Carolina’s defense (their only loss). I’m thinking of a score of something like 34-27 Gators, as they once again most likely get themselves back into the top ten.
