2018 Preakness Odds with Post Positions

  1. Quip +2000
  2. Lone Sailor +3000
  3. Sporting Chance +4000
  4. Diamond King +3000
  5. Good Magic +350
  6. Tenfold +4000
  7. Justify -230
  8. Bravazo +2800

Key Horse:  Good Magic +350

The only way to really make money on the Preakness exacta is if Justify doesn’t win the race. It’s hard to leave the Derby winner off any tickets because he appears to be the horse to beat. However, I must just out of principle.

Good Magic is a much better horse to use on top in the exacta than Justify. Sure, Justify looked to have easily beaten Good Magic in the Derby. However, Good Magic kept trying. Not only that, but he could improve in the two weeks after the Run for the Roses while Justify almost assuredly will run a worse race in the Preakness than he did to win the Kentucky Derby.

I’ll take the Chad Brown trained horse to turn the tables on his rival. I believe Good Magic is an overlay at +350 odds to win. He’s my exacta key horse.

Horses to Use:

  • Justify -230
It’s impossible to leave the Derby winner out of the exacta. There’s a good chance that Good Magic catches Justify. Although there will be a ton of money on the Good Magic/Justify exacta, there won’t be nearly as much as the Justify/Good Magic exacta.
  • Quip +2000
He’s a fresh horse. If Justify bombs, he could finish out of the exacta all together. In that case, Quip might pick up the pieces. He’s certainly worth a look at 20 to 1 odds to win. His odds to finish second to Good Magic are going to be huge.
  • Diamond King +3000
Like Quip, Diamond King didn’t run in the brutal Kentucky Derby. He got a nice prep victory when he won the Federico Teseo Stakes. Diamond King has some quality while his trainer, John Servis, doesn’t often run them unless he can win. The Good Magic/Diamond King exacta should pay huge if it hits.
