Preakness Key Horse: Quip +2000

I’m going for the money with my trifecta on Saturday. The Preakness Stakes has become a much more difficult race to win than the Kentucky Derby. The favorite to win the Derby has done so the past 6 years.

That’s not the same for the Preakness. Last year, Cloud Computing beat both Derby winner Always Dreaming and second choice Classic Empire. Why couldn’t the same thing happen in 2018 that happened in 2017?

Quip is the horse most capable of upsetting both Justify and Good Magic. He won the Tampa Bay Derby. He finished second in the Arkansas Derby. He can run close to the pace and kick it in when asked. There’s all sorts of reasons to like Quip to pull off the huge upset in the Preakness Stakes.

Second Place Preakness Trifecta Pick

Justify -230

Justify should win the Preakness Stakes. But, he could be too tired to either run down a horse like Quip or hold off Quip if Mike Smith decides to take the lead with the Derby winner. We mustn’t forget that Justify was a maiden until February this year.

Good Magic +350

I believe he could beat Justify this time. I see him more as Classic Empire, the horse that finished second in last year’s Preakness, as Exaggerator, the horse that beat the chalk, Nyquist, in the 2016 Preakness Stakes. Good Magic could beat Justify and still lose the Preakness to Quip.

Third Place Preakness Trifecta Pick

** Also using Justify and Good Magic

  • Diamond King +3000
  • Bravazo +2800
  • Sporting Chance +4000
  • Tenfold +4000
  • Lone Sailor +3000

Diamond King has a shot to win the Preakness Stakes. You must make tough decisions when putting together a trifecta ticket.  That’s why Diamond King doesn’t show up until third place on my tri.

Bravazo, Sporting Chance, Tenfold, and Lone Sailor are all good enough to hit the board. I can’t leave any of them out of the show slot.
