Each MLB team has a handful of games under their belts. Use my MLB free picks for the week to cash in big.
Can Boston beat the New York Yankees at home? On Saturday, Houston hosts Texas. Will the defending World Series Champions take down the Rangers? Then, on Sunday, the game that makes my MLB Free Picks is Colorado at Washington. Can the Rockies upset the Nationals in D.C.?
MLB Free Picks April 9-15
New York Yankees at Boston
When: Thursday, April 12 at 7:10 pm ET
Where: Fenway Park, Boston, MA
Analysis: New York Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone hasn’t said who will start for the Yankees on Thursday versus the hated Boston Red Sox. That’s not a problem because no matter who the Yankees start, I like the Red Sox to upset NYY on April 12.
Boston’s listed starter is Rick Porcello. So far this season, Porcello is 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. He’s throwing the way he was when he took home the Cy Young Award. That was only a few seasons ago.
If the Yankees starts Luis Severino on Thursday, there’s a good chance that Porcello and the Red Sox are dogs in this matchup. Whether Boston is the dog or not, I’m backing them.
Texas at Houston
When: Saturday, April 14 at 4:05 pm ET
Where: Minute Maid Park, Houston, TX
Analysis: Texas ace Cole Hamels is listed as Saturday’s starter. So far this season, Hamels hasn’t been all that great. His ERA is 6.19. His WHIP is 1.63. He’s gone 1 and 2 on the season.
Hamels has a decent record versus the Houston Astros, though. The Stros bat .259 versus Texas’ ace. Because Hamels has faced Houston batters over 200 times, the batting average isn’t that bad. Houston has the beset batting lineup in MLB.
Does that mean Hamels has a shot on Saturday? Yes, he has a shot, but that’s not the way I’m playing it. Cole Hamels could pitch well enough to keep this close. My guess, is that he won’t. I like Houston on the run line.
Colorado at Washington
When: Sunday, April 15 at 1:35 pm ET
Where: National Parks, Washington, DC
Analysis: Washington ace Stephen Strasburg should take the mound for the Nats on April 15. Strasburg’s 3.65 ERA so far this season isn’t bad. His 1.30 WHIP is just okay.
Versus the Rockies, Strasburg has allowed 22 hits from 70 at-bats. That’s a .314 batting average. Because Colorado has had success versus Stras in the past, it doesn’t mean they’ll have success against him on Sunday.
However, it does mean that Colorado is worth a play as an underdog on Sunday, April 15. I like the Rockies to get it done. They’re who I’ll be siding with.
