Will the rebuilding San Francisco 49ers hand the Super Bowl-hopeful Kansas City Chiefs a loss in their first preseason contest of the 2017 scrimmage season?
Can the dysfunctional New York Jets hang with the blossoming Tennessee Titans when they battle in the Big Apple?
Last but not least, will the Seattle Seahawks hand the now, Los Angeles Chargers a humbling loss in their ‘home’ opener in the City of Angels?
If you love backing teams that offer ‘real’ upset value – and a great return when you do nail your upset picks, then you’re going to be jumping for joy at the trio of Week 1 preseason upset picks that you’re about to get.
NFL Preseason Week 1 Expert Picks
San Francisco 49ers at Kansas City Chiefs
Friday, August 11 at 9:00 PM ET
Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
Analysis: Even in an early preseason matchup, the Kansas City Chiefs are the easy pick to annihilate the San Francisco 49ers, as their superior defense harasses Brian Hoyer, Matt Barkley and C.J. Beathard while Patrick Mahomes shows why Andy Reid traded up to get him in the first round, (although he should have taken DeShaun Watson). The home team in this series is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
Pick: Chiefs 28 Niners 14
Tennessee Titans at New York Jets
Saturday, August 12 at 7:30 PM ET
MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey
Analysis: I love the direction the Tennessee Titans are headed in under the still blossoming Marcus Mariota, but I’m thinking Todd Bowles’ aggressive defense will harass veteran backup Matt Cassel into at least one costly turnover while the Jets get some inspiring play out of either Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg or Bryce Petty. The Titans will be looking at their defensive players mostly while the Jets are looking to find their starting quarterback – and someone that will actually catch the damn ball.
The home team in this series is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
Pick: Jets 24 Titans 20
Seattle Seahawks at Los Angeles Chargers
Sunday, August 13 at 8:00 PM ET
StubHub Center, Carson, California
Analysis: I know the Seattle Seahawks are the far superior team – when both of these franchises play their starters. However, with both teams going to their reserves and Los Angeles christening its new L.A. digs, I’m thinking the Bolts get the ‘feel-good’ win to kick off their new era.
Kellen Clemens will start for the Bolts and Mike Bercovici will play, but the Chargers are hoping the recently added Cardale Jones will win the backup job to Philip Rivers, even if he doesn’t play tonight. After signing Austin Davis over a clearly ‘better’ Colin Kaepernick this offseason I’m actually hoping Seattle gets some sense smacked into them. The Chargers get the win to please their new fans in their unofficial home opener. The Seahawks are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games while the underdogs in this rivalry are 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.
Pick: San Diego 24 Seattle 17
