My first free NHL pick for this week is on Thursday, Feb. 15. How will the tough L.A. Kings fair on the road versus the defending Stanley Cup Champions?
Then, on Saturday, I pick the winner of Rangers at Ottawa. Are the Senators a lock? Or, will the Rangers come up with the win?
On Sunday, the Rangers head home to battle the Philadelphia Flyers in NBC’s nationally televised matchup. Will the Flyers put a beat down on NYR?
NHL Free Picks Feb 12 – 18
Los Angeles at Pittsburgh
When: Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, PA
Analysis: The Kings battled the Penguins on Jan. 18 this year. Pittsburgh beat the L.A. Kings 3 to 1. That game took place in L.A. Does that mean L.A. has no shot on Feb. 15?
I don’t think so. One thing to note about the Kings’ loss to the Pens on Jan. 18 is how Pitt scored 2 goals in the third period. After the second period, the score was 1 to 1. The Kings’ D allows 2.4 goals per match.
That ranks second in NHL. I like Los Angeles to pull off the money line upset on Thursday.
Pick: Los Angeles
NY Rangers at Ottawa
When: Saturday, Feb. 17 at 2:00 pm ET
Where: Canadian Tire Center, Ottawa, ON, CN
Analysis: The Rangers lost 2 to 3 the last time they battled Ottawa. NYR might be favored in this match. Whether they are or not, it won’t matter to me.
It’s difficult to see NYR coming up huge on the road versus the Senators a day before having to take on Philadelphia at home. The Rangers are in last place in the Metropolitan Standings. They’re also not very strong on the road.
Ottawa’s the play to beat NYR by at least 2 goals.
Philadelphia at NY Rangers
When: Sunday, Feb. 18 at 12:00 pm ET
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
Analysis: The Flyers head to New York to battle the Rangers. Philly has been one of the surprise teams in the Metropolitan Division this season. Could Philadelphia beat the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Sunday?
Maybe. Granted, the last time these two threw down, the Rangers dominated Philly 5 to 1. I believe that game was an anomaly, though. Philadelphia has been the better overall team this season.
Because the Rangers throttled the Flyers in the last match, NYR might be over bet on the money line. I’ll side with Philadelphia to turn the tables on New York this Sunday, Feb. 18.
